What is GLP- 1 ???

GLP-1 is a hormone naturally produced in the intestines that plays a crucial role in regulating blood sugar levels and promoting satiety. 

Functions: 

  • Stimulates the pancreas to release insulin, lowering blood sugar

  • Slows down gastric emptying, reducing hunger and promoting fullness

  • Reduces glucagon secretion, further contributing to lower blood sugar levels

Medical Uses:

GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) are synthetic medications that mimic the effects of GLP-1. They are primarily used to treat: 

  • Type 2 diabetes: GLP-1 RAs improve blood sugar control and weight loss. 

  • Obesity: GLP-1 RAs can promote weight loss by reducing appetite and slowing down digestion. 

Benefits: 

  • Effective for managing blood sugar and weight 

  • Can reduce the risk of cardiovascular events in people with type 2 diabetes 

  • May have potential benefits for other metabolic disorders, such as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease 

Potential Side Effects:

Nausea, Diarrhea, Vomiting, Constipation, and Pancreatitis (rare).
